Patiently waiting, but feeling a lil' anxious as well.

Okay so i believe the judges for this competition have decided on the winners of each individual category and are due to make their announcement as to who exactly those people are this coming Monday (September 17) in some way and at some stage throughout the day.

I cant say i am slightly anxious about this, because i feel my 3 entries were quite strong/clever in accordance to the brief, but at the same time i have no idea what the judges were looking for exactly, which might mean i had no chance of winning.

Either way it is still exciting and i extend my best to everyone for their entries, i managed to get a sneak-peak at a handful of them and was impressed by the variety of ideas :]

ALL THE BEST EVERYONE.

My United Nations Competition entries.

The following three images are what i submitted into the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Energy for All - 2012 competition. The brief was very open to interpretation, but all in all I feel i have entered three strong images that demonstrate three individual ways of creating a message without being overly selective or subjective.

Yes i was focused around the colour green, because when i did a quick survey amongst my  friends via sms asking what 'Sustainable Energy' means to then, the general response from them was focussed around a "green" future, so i ran with that in each of my images.

The use of electricity for me was also an important factor to focus on, because i do feel that our modern society demands so much of it and yet we forget to take more steps to help conserve it - whether it be at home, work or play. So there is also a hint of this in my creations.

Anyway, take a moment to look over them and please leave me any feedback if you like :]

Theme title: Waste and Inefficiency
Conceptual break-down: My concept was aimed at how our dependancy to consume electricity far outweighs our ability to conserve/minimise our use of it.

_

Theme title: What Can I Do?
Conceptual break-down: A solution for sustainable energy will not happen overnight, but we can certainly start to make all the right moves towards making it happen.

_

Theme title: The future We Want.
Conceptual break-down: I wanted to use a simplified way of explaining that is up to everyone - general public (footprint) - industry (bootprint) - business (toe-heelprints) and youth (sneaker print) to try leave a greener carbon footprint when it comes to the future we want.

24/4/2012

What: United Nations competition - 2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy.
Where: CSIRO - Discovery Centre.

Notes from today:
Christopher from the UN's Australian branch.
  • 1 in 5 lack electrical energy.
  • 3 billion people still rely on tradition means of heating (an actual fire)
  • energy wastage, supply and demand continues to grow at a rapid rate in established society.
  • balancing all elements of modern growth and development requires us to live in a sustainable way.

Three categories to think about:

  1. What is the future i want?
  2. How do we stop waste and inefficient use of energy?
  3. What can i do to help?

Adrian from CIT.
  • The essence of this competition is to challenge yourself and go beyond your current abilities to fulfil a message.
  • Express curiosity in this opportunity to participate.
  • Face the challenge and grow from the experience.
  • This is a real-world issue that you can help to send a message out to the world about so as to better educate and create change.

Woman from CSIRO office.
  • Social - bringing all people together.
  • Environmental - maintaining a balance.
  • Resources - use and re-use.
  • Growth - and its demands on the earth.
  • Technology - to help the issue.

Stuart from Questacon.
  • Am i just about sending a message? or am i all about creating change?
  • My tool to help is my skills as a photographer and my photographs.
  • How can i best combine the two?
Frank Zapper - Philosopher (research some of his thoughts)

  • CREATE EMOTION - CREATE CHANGE.
  • creating a sense of guilt does not necessarily create change.
  • The issue is complex, but the message can be simple.
  • Create a result that encourages people to change and enjoy/embrace the benefits of change.

Since this initial brief, i have gone away and done some research into it all and found some conceptual images that may help create some ideas in my head to continue with this further. I'm confident once i have time to really sit down and think about all this and begin to work on a concept it will all come together for me, but for now, my attention is on my CIT assignments and assessment tasks.

Stay tuned.
